Let’s face it—food and wine are a dynamic duo. Like peanut butter and jelly, Batman…
Fete Des Meres
Fête des Mères, or Mother’s Day, is a special occasion in France that is celebrated on the last Sunday of May or the first Sunday of June, as it is this year: June 4, 2023, falling 3 weeks later than our US Mother’s Day Holiday date of May 14 . While the dates may be different, in both cultures, it is a time for families to come together and honor the important role that mothers play in our lives.
The history of this French holiday dates back to the 1800s and was adopted as a way to honor the mothers of large families whose husbands had fought in World War I.
In France, many families, the day begins with a special breakfast or brunch, where everyone gathers around the table to enjoy delicious food and spend time together. Many families also exchange gifts, such as flowers, chocolates, or handmade crafts, to show their love and appreciation for their mothers, often taking the opportunity to share stories and memories of their mothers, reflecting on the many ways in which they have shaped their lives. For me, living so far away from my mom and family, I never miss a call and usually send a big, joyous bouquet of flowers to wherever the family is gathering.
After the meal, families often spend time outdoors, taking advantage of the beautiful weather and enjoying the sights and sounds of nature. This might involve a picnic in the park, a hike in the countryside, or a trip to the beach.
Overall, Fête des Mères is a special time for families (mine and others) in France to come together, celebrate their mothers, and show their appreciation for all that they do. It is a day of love, joy, and togetherness that is cherished by families across the country.
